[ARCHIVED] Take Five: The Village’s Initiative for a Safer La Grange Road

Take Five Initiative

The Village of La Grange Park is advocating for legislative support to implement "Take Five", a proposal to lower the speed limit on La Grange Road from 30 MPH to 25 MPH between Ogden Avenue and 31st Street. The goal of this effort is to:

  • Enhance pedestrian and driver safety in the Village
  • Reflect the residential and mixed-use nature of the corridor
  • Reduce the risk of severe crashes

Why Change Is Needed

Crash data highlights the urgency of this proposal—between 2019 and 2023, 61 crashes occurred within just one block, including pedestrian and bicyclist incidents. Residents and businesses have consistently expressed concerns about speeding, citing it as a top safety issue in the area. Despite focused police enforcement measures and speed feedback signage, speeding persists along this 20,000-vehicle-per-day corridor. A permanent speed reduction is necessary to improve pedestrian and driver safety along this busy corridor.

Next Steps

The Village met with legislators in Springfield recently to discuss the urgent need for this change, and is working with IDOT on approval to make this critical safety measure a reality.

The need for safer conditions along this corridor was identified in the Village’s Streetscape Improvement Plan. To learn more, please visit the program webpage.

Residents can support the “Take 5” campaign by submitting written comments to the Village in favor of reducing the speed limit along La Grange Road. These comments play a vital role in demonstrating strong community backing for improved safety measures. By sharing personal experiences, safety concerns, or support for pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly streets, residents help the Village present a compelling case to state transportation officials.
