Sign Permits
No sign, except those identified as exempt in Section 15 of the Zoning Code (Signs), shall be erected, constructed, altered or relocated without first obtaining a sign permit.
Application Requirements
Submit the following for review - please review all requirements prior to submittal:
- Completed sign permit application (PDF) - each sign will require a separate permit
- Completed contractor registration form (PDF) and all required paperwork
- Permit fee (per sign) - $125 illuminated - $75 non-illuminated/face change
- Three copies of a current, legal plat of survey with exact position of sign(s)
- Three copies of full color drawings and specifications for each sign
Submitted plat copy should not be reduced or enlarged. Village is able to make copies of any original documents for application purposes.
Each sign will require a Zoning review and once approved will go for a Building review. Sign Code information is contained in Section 15 of the Zoning Code.
Prohibited Signs
The following signs are prohibited by Zoning Code:
- Animated Signs
- Attention-Getting Devices
- Flashing Signs
- Floodlights
- Moving Signs
- Obscene Signs
- Off-Premise Signs
- Painted and Illegally Affixed Signs
- Permanent Banner Signs
- Pole Signs
- Portable Signs
- Roof Signs
- Signs that Interfere with Traffic
- Snipe Signs
- Spotlights
- Strobe Lights
- Unsafe Signs
Temporary Signs
Temporary Signs meeting the following Zoning requirements do not require permits:
- Sign is not a temporary pole or wall sign
- Signs must be related to goods or services sold on the premises
- Temporary off-premise signs are prohibited
- No temporary sign may be illuminated
- All temporary signs must remain in good condition during the display period. Throughout the display period, corrective action must be taken immediately should there be any problems with the appearance, condition or maintenance of the sign and/or support hardware
- Only one type of temporary sign may be displayed on a lot at one time
A-Frame Signs
- Permitted only within the C-1 and C-2 Districts
- Limited to six square feet in area and four feet in height
- Limited to business hours only - must be stored indoors at all other times - must not be used during high winds or heavy snow conditions
- Limited to one per business - minimum of twenty foot separation required between all A-frame signs
- Must be placed within fifteen feet of primary entrance and must not interfere with pedestrian traffic or violate ADA or other accessibility codes
- May be placed in public right-of-way but must maintain five foot sidewalk clearance at all times
Banners - Temporary
- Permitted to advertise an event (e.g. grand opening, new ownership, special sale, or new goods or services sold on the premises) for any non-residential use
- Limited to thirty-two square feet in area
- Limited to one per zoning lot up to four times per year
- May not be located higher than the roofline of the building to which it is attached or if attached to permanent sign, not higher that the sign.
- May not encroach into the public right-of-way
- Limited to display period of thirty days and must be removed within two days after the event
Construction Signs
- Limited to sixteen square feet in area and six feet in height
- May not be erected prior to approval of site plan and must be removed within seven days of issuance of occupancy or project completion
- Limited to one sign per street frontage
- Garage or Yard Sale Signs
- Limited to twelve square feet
- May not be posted more than 24 hours prior to event and must be removed within 24 hours after event. No signs shall be posted in the public right-of-way
Political Signs
- Limited to sixteen square feet per side
- May not be posted on any public property
- Signs may be posted on private property only, with the permission of the property owner
Real Estate Signs - For Sale / For Rent - Open House
- Limited to four square feet
- Must be located ten feet from any side lot line
- Must be removed within 48 hours of sale or lease
- Open House signs may be displayed during the day of the event and must be removed within two hours of event end
- Limited to one sign per street frontage
Vehicle “For Sale” Signs
- Vehicles displaying “for sale” sign must be parked in lot where vehicle sales are permitted
- Vehicle may be parked and displayed for sale by a private individual at that individuals home, including the driveway, as well as driven and parked throughout the normal daily routine
- Must be removed within 24 hours of vehicle sale
Window Signs - Temporary
- Permitted only within the C-1 and C-2 Districts
- May be fixed to inside of a window, advertising good or service sold on the premises, provided that the signs occupy no more that 40% of the total window area.
- Limited to display period of thirty days and must be removed within two days after the event
- Limited to one per zoning lot up to four times per year
